Custom Development
Custom Web Applications, Built Around How You Work
Portals, databases, integrations and internal tools — for the jobs a brochure website cannot do. We build software that fits the process you already have, instead of asking you to change it.
What We Do
When a Website Isn’t Enough
Some projects are not really websites. A grant process that runs on paper and email. A research archive nobody can search. Pricing that customers have to phone in for. Records kept in a spreadsheet that three people edit at once.
That is the work we mean by custom development — software shaped around a process you already have, built by the same small team that handles the design, hosting and support. We have been doing it in Hamilton since 2013.

Businesses And Organizations We've Worked With
What We Build
The Parts a Website Doesn’t Come With
Most projects need a few of these rather than all of them. We work out which before quoting.
API Integrations
Connecting your website to the systems you already run — so data moves between them automatically instead of someone retyping it.
Custom Databases
Structured storage for the records your organization actually keeps, designed so they can be searched, filtered and reported on properly.
Client & Member Portals
Logged-in areas where clients, members or staff see what is theirs — documents, applications, history, whatever the relationship involves.
Applications & Intake Forms
Multi-step applications, registrations and intake processes that people can finish in one sitting, with the submissions landing somewhere usable.
Internal Tools & Dashboards
The unglamorous software a team runs on: admin screens, review queues, reporting views. Built for the people who use it every day.
Live Data Feeds
Prices, availability, listings or status pulled in and kept current automatically, so the site is never quietly out of date.
Search & Filtering at Scale
Making a large collection genuinely findable — the difference between having your data online and being able to use it.
Third-Party Connections
CRMs, payment providers, accounting software, email platforms, booking systems. If it offers a suitable API, we can usually connect it.
Accounts & Permissions
Roles that reflect how your organization actually works, so people see and change exactly what they should.
Automating Manual Processes
The work someone currently does by hand every week — copying, checking, re-entering — is usually the first thing worth automating.
Built to Evolve
Requirements change over time. We build with future updates in mind so the application can adapt as your organization, processes and priorities change.
Hosted and Supported In-House
The same team that built it keeps it running, on Canadian servers, with backups and updates handled.
Canadian Centre for Epigraphic Documents
A specialist research archive turned into something scholars anywhere can actually search — complex historical records, structured and made findable.

FAQ
Common Questions
A website presents information. An application does something — takes an application and routes it, keeps records and lets you search them, pulls live data from another system, gives people accounts. If your project is mostly pages, our web design service is the right fit. If it has to do a job, this is.
Genuinely varies, and anyone quoting from a webpage is guessing. It depends on how many things the system has to do and how much it has to talk to. We start by working out what you actually need, which is often smaller than the first description of it, then quote in writing before anything is built.
Custom applications typically take longer than standard websites because there are more requirements and workflows to work through. Requirements also clarify as you see the thing working, so we build in stages — you have something usable early rather than waiting months for a single delivery, and the direction can be corrected before it gets expensive.
Usually, yes. CRMs, accounting packages, payment providers, email platforms, booking systems — if it offers an API, it can generally be joined up. We check what is possible before quoting rather than promising first and finding out later.
Often, yes — a portal or a form or an integration can be built onto an existing site, including ones we did not build. We will look at what you have and tell you honestly whether building onto it or rebuilding is the better value.
Yes. Sometimes we build the whole thing, sometimes we build one piece alongside an internal team or another vendor. We will agree who owns what at the start so nothing falls between the two.
They usually do, and staged builds exist partly for that reason. Changes that fit the current stage we absorb; anything that materially changes the scope we price and agree with you before doing. What we will not do is quietly do the work and hand you a larger invoice.
You’ll retain access to your organization’s data and the areas of the application included for your team to manage. Access to the underlying platform and code depends on how the application is built. Where a project uses the proprietary EB Media CMS, the platform itself remains with EB Media. We’ll explain the platform, hosting and access structure clearly before development begins.
Software needs looking after. We host, monitor, back up and maintain what we build, and we are available for changes as your process evolves. Most clients keep us on for exactly that reason.
Sometimes. It depends on how it was built and what state it is in. We will look at it and give you a straight answer, including if that answer is that rebuilding would cost you less than maintaining it.
